Artuš Scheiner was born in Benešov near Prague on 29. 10. 1863 in a family of a lawyer, after the graduation on the technical secondary school in Prague he worked as a revenue commissioner of the national revenue office. After 1895 he went into the premature retirement and devoted himself to graphic and illustrative work solely. He was a member of the Association of Artists Mánes and since 1903 the treasurer of this association.

He began to perform as a draughtsman of social current events and of artworks and drawings with humoristic accent for the pictorial periodical Svitozor of the publisher Vilímek, for the journal Národní listy, and contributed into the magazines Paleeek, Švanda dudák as well as Zlatá Praha. In the time period 1891 until 1906, he worked together with the Berlin based magazine Lustige Blätter.

Since 1902, he specialized almost exclusively in fairy tale illustrations. The bibliography of the fairy tale books, which he provided with his accompanying watercolours and drawings, which was set up on the occasion of his seventieth anniversary in the year 1933, counted 94 published publications at that time. In the year 1933, there was organized an exhibition of his original works and books, which he illustrated, in the library of the capital Prague.

He died on 20. 12. 1938 in Prague.

[SCHWARZ, ARMIN]
Caviar-Kalender 1896. Zehnter Jahrgang. Von Jean Qui Rit.
Budapest, Verlag von Gustav Grimm, [1896]. [21x15,5 cm]. 172, (4) pp. In publisher's original wrappers, with a risqué colored lithographed front cover by G. Sieben. Edges uncut. A few light spots along the fore-edge and margins of the covers, on a very few pages visible in margins. Minimal cornerloss on rear cover. The texts and verses (by Armand Sylvestre [1837-1901], Catulle Mendes [1841-1909], Arthur Bernede [1871-1937] and others) included in this issue are richly illustrated with drawings (mostly black & white) by G. Sieben, A. Prude and others. Jean qui rit (''Jean who laughs '') is the pseudonym of Armin Schwarz, editor of all 20 volumes of Caviar-Kalender (1887-1906). This spicy, satirical and profusely-illustrated publication was prohibited in Prussia and partly banned in Austria (Hayn-Gotendorf I, 581).Brontops Baruqhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12737848684823378791noreply@blogger.com
